One night, about twenty years ago, I was watching a three-part TV documentary on the anthropology of man. They went through this period and then that period in the development of our species, but there was still a period with a question mark next to it, which is called the missing link. To this day, they don’t know exactly what it is. My idea for this was that there was an anthropologist or an archaeologist digging in the ground. Suddenly, he removes a shovel full of dirt, and this face appears. It’s been in there for so many years, that’s why one ear is fossilised and another is eaten away, and the missing link has grown into his surroundings, waiting to be discovered. (ca.1979)
