Phil always tried to get me into English football. He was a big Manchester United fan, and he even bought a hundred shares in the club as soon as it went public. One day he took me to see them play Newcastle United, as we were playing a concert there the following night. I was watching Newcastle’s fans: their team were playing really well and they thought they had the game in the bag. Then the first Manchester United goal went in, and their faces dropped, then the second, then the third…. Now people were crying. Then the fourth goal went in and they’re ready to hang themselves! That’s why I drew the rope in there. I do follow some NFL teams, but I’ve always been a casual fan. This match gave me a sense of what it’s like to be a true fan and how it’s almost like a religion to some. (ca.1976)
